Top Ten Brew Pubs in Portland
by Bittersweet Child 'O Mine, Rose City Rollers
Portland, OR is one of the great beer destinations in the United
States -- it has so many brewpubs and microbreweries that it has been
called "Munich on the Willamette."
Portland is well known for Micro-Brewery Beer. It has been said that
Portland is the home of the micro-beer revolution in the United
States. Portland has more breweries per capita than any other city in
America.
Here are my Top 10 Not to Miss breweries in Portland. Stop by for a
few brews, get a tee shirt and a picture!
Rogue Brewery
One of the Rose City Rollers' generous sponsors! Rogue Ales are made
with the finest hops and barley malt, free range coastal water and
Pacman top fermenting proprietary yeast. Preservative, additives,
chemicals... never! Rogue does not pasteurize its products. We
recommend 'Dead Guy Ale', and you wont be sorry. Just be prepared for
a kick in the ol' pants! Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap
sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead. But don't just take
our word for it, get the sampler and see for yo-self! Missed your
chance to visit the pub? Get a pint at the Portland airport before you
fly home!
1339 NW Flanders, Portland, OR 97209, (503) 222-5910
Hair of the Dog Brewing Company
Not a brew pub (brewery is not on-site) but you should stop by and try
a beer and get a shirt. Hair of the Dog is known for its unusual beers
and its devotion to traditional craft-brewing techniques. The
brewery's claim to worldwide fame was its barley wine 'Dave', which
was among the strongest beers ever brewed, at 29 percent ABV. Their
most recent "must have" beer is 'Fred from the Wood', which is their
normal version of 'Fred' that is aged for six-months in American Oak
casks. Stop by and ask for Alan, he loves visitors!
4509 SE 23rd Avenue Portland, OR 97202 (503) 232-6585
Bridgeport Brewing Company
This fantastic brewpub exists in an old warehouse very near the
Willamette River in downtown Portland. The place has brewery tours,
wonderful cask conditioned ales, and pizza that is almost too tasty to
be real! Oregon's oldest craft brewery. The India Pale ale will leave
you wanting for more.
1313 NW Marshall, Portland, OR 97209 (503) 241-7179
McMenamins Breweries
There are several McMenamins locations spread throughout the city, so
check their website to find one near your hotel. Each location is
unique and is housed within historic buildings of one kind or another,
from parochial schools to a world-famous music hall. A local favorite
is the Bagdad Theater Pub. Grab a pint of the 'Ruby Brew', and maybe
catch a cheap movie. And while your there, try the tater tots and
get'em "cajunized", you won't regret it. Southeast Portland's
marvelous relic of Hollywood's Golden Age is a stunning movie palace
full of wonder and surprises. The Bagdad's interior is an attraction
unto itself with barreled arches, ornate, wrought iron fixtures,
brilliant-colored mosaic work, and painted and stenciled Mediterranean
designs and mythical characters. Kick back in the theater and enjoy a
slice of pizza and a handcrafted ale during the show.
Bagdad Theater & Pub: 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Portland, OR (503) 225-5555
Widmer Gasthaus
Widmer, you have heard of them right? They make beer here in Portland
and its pretty awesome. Stop by, get a pretzel and a beer sampler,
although most recommend the 'Broken Halo IPA'. "A devilishly bold,
heavenly smooth India Pale Ale." The 'Drop Top Amber' is not to be
missed either. They also have really special barley wine, don't be
scared, just try it. Oh, and they have a pub at the Portland airport.
Sweet!
955 N Russell St, Portland, OR 97227 (503) 281-3333
Full Sail Brewing
Company
Yep, they are from here and they make great beer. Swing by for a pint,
grab a bite, tour the brewery, or just soak up the view. The Tasting
Room and Pub is open daily from 11:30 am for lunch and dinner. Brewery
tours are available daily, free of charge at 1, 2, 3 and 4pm.
307 SW Montgomery Street Portland, OR 97201 (503) 222-5343
The Laurelwood Public House
They make great beer, and also have a pub at the airport! Try the
'Tree Hugger Porter'. It is organic with a chocolate flavor and a dry
roasty finish. They use 100% organically grown barley malt for this
environmentally friendly fermentation. You are visiting Oregon after
all, and might as well wet your whistle with some tasty organic beer.
5115 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, OR 97213 (503) 282-0622
Hop Works
One of Portland's most recent additions to the brewing scene, but they
fit right in with their tasty micro brew, love of bicycles and 100%
organic products. This place is the place to stop by and have a
relaxing-yet-amazing fresh brew, try the pizza too, it is extra
special.
2944 SE Powell Boulevard, Portland, Oregon 97202 (503) 232-HOPS (4677)
Lucky Labrador Brewing Company
This spot is located in an old roofing and sheet metal warehouse. With
high wood-trussed ceilings, the Lab's warm rustic ambiance is a great
place for a neighborhood pub. I recommend the 'Hawthorne's Best
Bitter'.
915 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Portland, OR 97214 (503) 236-3555
Tugboat Brewing Company
The Tugboat Brewery is considered one of the smallest in the state,
brewing 8 kegs per batch. These comparatively small batches enable
them to treat the product less like a mass-produced ale, and more like
the craft product that spawned the micro brewery industry. This little
known brew pub is not to be missed. The owners and brewers are usually
there to answer any question or just to chat you up about beer.
Seriously, stop by and taste how great small batch beer can really be.
